Company History

"To our consumers and their families, we thank you for trusting and believing in Crossroads of Western Iowa every day. Your faith in us is a wonderful, unspoken compliment and gift." - Brent Dillinger, Chief Executive Officer

Like the rich history of each individual who comes through the door at Crossroads of Western Iowa, we’re thankful for the journey that has helped us facilitate more than 300 individuals and their families achieving dreams they never thought possible. Here’s a brief overview of our organization’s roots.

New Beginnings: 1975-1980

Crossroads of Western Iowa originally incorporated in May of 1975 as “Monona Services, Inc.” We were founded by the Monona County ARC (Association for Retarded Citizens), where services were provided in a rented property in downtown Onawa, IA. At the time, eight consumers were being served. The organization moved several years later to 301 10th Street, in the north part of town.

Expansion + Innovation: 1980-2000

As the number of individuals served climbed to 35, there were several additions to the building. Vocational opportunities included building wooden boxes for Westendorf Manufacturing in Onawa, pallets for Wells Blue Bunny in Le Mars and opening a can and bottle redemption center in the shop. In 1989, a 4,000 square foot building was purchased on South Harrison Street in Missouri Valley, IA, and services started for six individuals.

Growing Services: 2000-Today

Crossroads of Western Iowa purchased a 5,000 square foot building at 16th Street and 9th Avenue in Council Bluffs and started an ADP (Adult Day Program). The Council Bluffs ADP program currently serves 34 individuals in meaningful programs designed specifically for each individual’s needs.

In 2000, the organization name was changed to Crossroads of Western Iowa. In 2003, a separate housing corporation was formed in Onawa to provide HUD housing for individuals. In 2004, another housing corporation was formed in Council Bluffs to also provide HUD housing for individuals.

We are excited to continue helping our communities with a variety of services for consumers and employment and volunteer opportunities well into the future!
